Explore the Spanish & Latin American Studies Program at Dalhousie

The Spanish and Latin American Studies program at ¶¶ÒùÊÓƵ provides an academic pathway for students to develop proficiency in the Spanish language and a comprehensive understanding of the diverse cultures of the Hispanic world. With over 600 million Spanish speakers globally, our program opens access to a significant and vibrant community while promoting intercultural competence through the study of language, history, and cultural dynamics.

Our curriculum accommodates learners at all proficiency levels, from beginners to advanced speakers, with a structured progression in language acquisition. In addition to foundational language courses, students can engage in specialized studies, including translation, Latin American and Spanish history, cultural studies, politics, literature, and film. These courses foster an in-depth awareness of the socio-political and artistic landscapes of Spain and Latin America, cultivating a nuanced global perspective.

The program offers major and minor degree options, as well as a Certificate in Spanish and Latin American Studies. This certificate provides official recognition of students' linguistic and cultural skills and serves as an excellent complement to degrees in International Business, Political Science, Global Development, History, Health, and other disciplines. Graduates find that their studies in Spanish are highly applicable in careers within government, NGOs, and community organizations.

Dalhousie’s Spanish and Latin American Studies program is more than language learning; it is an academic journey that enhances career opportunities, broadens perspectives, and fosters meaningful engagement with global communities.

You don’t need to know how to speak Spanish to study in our program, since many of our non-language courses are taught in English and open as electives to students in other programs.

For students interested in becoming fluent, our language courses range from the study of Spanish used in international business to phonetics and translation. If you have some prior knowledge of the language, you’ll need to take a placement test to determine your level of ability and which language course you’ll start in.

You always make friends faster in a language class. The very nature of them requires you to talk to each other. It’s brilliant! And the Spanish professors are wonderful. I’ve never had such fun in the classroom!
